So for a while, I've been considering jailbreaking my ipod touch, but I am a little hesitant to do so do to not finding very many accessible jailbreaks. Any help would be appreciated. I want to do this.
What version of ios are you running?
What does this jail breaking do? Like, do you still have to buy apps from Apple?
I'm running ios 4.2.1
Jailbreaking eliminates the need to have apple verify software you run. However, these unverified apps include viruses. Also, warranties are revoked with jailbreaking. I wouldn't do it, but it's your choice.
Keep in mind that a jailbroken iOS device may not support Voiceover, because you are running a custom operating system. Also, Apple has no responsibility to support your experiments with access technology, even though what you're doing is perfectly legal.
really? it wouldn't support voiceover? That seems odd because either way, you still are running the ipod touch system, just jailbroken.
Sometimes it might not support voice over. Other times it might.
how do you know whether it does or not?
From what I hear, you can't be sure. You just jailbreak it and if you don't hear voice over anymore, you can be pretty sure it doesn't work. However, other people have jailbroken their devices fine, so it is possible. I can find some of them and post here.
thanks. that would be greatly appreciated.
I'm still looking. The one I've found is

Ok, so to answer the op, 4.2 on an iPod touch 3g is tethered at the moment, meaning that you have to rejailbreak every time you reboot the device if you want to run jailbreak apps or safari. In other words, it's not worth it.
It's *possible* that if you jailbreak using a custom ipsw that vo could be removed, although people only really make customised ios bundles if you want to unlock as opposed to just jailbreaking. The creater of the ipsw would have to diside to remove vo though, it's not like it could happen by accident.
I'm only able to speculate on this though since I've never heard of vo not working after a jailbreak. I do know that ios functionality can be disabled though since the latest untethered jailbreak for 4.2 which is currently in beta had bluetooth disabled up until a week or 2 ago.
I'm not trying to target anyone thats posted hear, but the vo not working mith seems to have been started by fanboys who fall in love with apple streight away once they hear there computer talking.
Cydia (The main app store that you have access to once you've jailbroken) is completely inaccessible. There are solutions to this, but it's 3:15 am here and since I strongly suggest that the op doesn't jailbreak his touch until an untethered jb comes out for it, I don't really want to post them if no one minds.
Just trying to help & no offence meant at all.
Go read applevis. All your questions are answered their. VO will still work, I'm running jailbroken IOS 4.2.1 with icy as my cydia, no problems.
If you JailBreak the iPod. VoiceOver will still work. Just don't install a custom firmware. I have an JailBroken iPod touch which is using VoiceOver as affectively as the original unbroken firmware.
The advantages of jail breaking are that you can gain access to many applications without having to purchase them from the Apple store. These include navigational appps.
If you upgrade to the latest firmware edition from Apple you wont be able to downgrade the firmware. (It is possible to downgrade but it is complicated and requires sighted assistance). What edition of the firmware do you have on your iPod?
I don't know anything about what will happen to the VoiceOver we all, or many of us, need, but as it appears to be a core component I doubt it will break.
However, bear in mind the following before you decide to jailbreak your device:
What did you get the device for? If it was to fool around with, you may as well jailbreak if that suits you.
If, however, you're like an increasing number of us mobile users, this device is quickly become an extension of you. Most people my age and younger in the Coast Guard flotilla have one of these: blind, sighted, wheelchair bound, boat crew, air crew, us computer geek people, the radio people, etc. And to my knowledge, none of us have jailbroken ours, because we have these devices to use them.
This jailbreaking reminds me of when I was a teenager and one of my friends wwanted to, as we called it, lower his car:
put on some smaller wheels, piddle with the suspension to basically make it run closer to the ground. There was more to it, at least in his case, that he had planned. Anyway he invited us all over to see what he had planned for it: hadn't started yet. But we were all gathered around in his garage, when his father walked in, asked what we were planning to do. The son piped up, told him what his plan was. The father's response was: "Are you still planning to go to work with that thing on Monday?" This was summer, so we all had jobs, but the point was well taken. How much time do you want to spend putting it up on blocks? How much fooling around with it do you want to do, when you've gotta use it to go to work?
I'm all for experimentation and tinkering: that's what old boxes are for. Maybe if you have you a new iPod 4th Generation, jail bait your old one and, well, good times. But seriously, if you have to go to work with yours, rather, if it's gotta work for you, I wouldn't jail bait, or rather jailbreak, it.
Wait, with this jailbreak thing, you can get any app fromt the apple store, and not have to buy it?
Wrong, very wrong.
You pay for it if it's for sale. But you get access to Cidya (currently not usable by VoiceOver though that's being worked on) and Icy as different stores.
They're stores, so some apps are free and some you buy just like Apple's App store. The difference is, for better or worse, you aren't restricted to the apps Apple approves.
And you're outside of your warranty as well.
